| HISTORY |
|
The Berry Burk building is located in the heart of downtown Richmond, at the southwest corner of 6th and Grace Streets. Considered a beloved Richmond landmark, this building has graced the lives of many Richmonder residents as a symbol of architectural beauty and fine retail offerings.
The building had previously been the home of The Berry Burk Company, which was a long-time Richmond men's and women's clothing retailer. The company was originated as the dry goods store McAdams, Berry and Co., which was formed by George B. McAdams and Oscar H. Berry in 1879. Berry later bought out the company and renamed it Berry and Company. It moved to its 525 E. Grace Street location in 1926. In 1931, Burk & Company, a clothing company that originated in Baltimore, Maryland, bought out Berry and Company to form Berry-Burk.
The four-story building is listed as a contributing resource to the Grace Street Commercial Historic District. Originally designed by the Richmond firm of Baskervill/Lambert, the building was constructed in 1926 in the Renaissance-Revival style.
The first-story features large display windows on the Grace Street (North) side (the commercial entry) and partially on the 6th Street (East) side (the residential entry). An entablature separates the first and second stories, and paneled spandrels at the second and third stories. Another entablature separates the third and fourth stories. The fourth story and the entablature are decorated with lush carvings and polychromed in brilliant shades and blue, red, and gold. The Grace Street entrance features a richly- carved architrave on the first story with a two-story arch above that is crowned by a shield featuring a formally-attired gentlemen in a top hat. The original illuminated sign remains on the top of the building.
Now reborn as commercial space and luxury apartment homes, the Berry Burk continues to shine in a revitalized downtown Richmond.
